Celebrating Grand Seiko’s Legacy: The 140th-Anniversary Spring Drive Watch

In 1881, the visionary Kintaro Hattori founded his watchmaking workshop. His approach of always being one step ahead is still reflected today in Grand Seiko’s creations. Although Grand Seiko itself was launched much later, in 1960, it fully embodies Hattori’s foresight with unprecedented designs and innovative production techniques.

A timepiece inspired by nature

In 2021, Grand Seiko paid tribute to its 140-year heritage with a new watch inspired by the tranquil waters of Lake Suwa. The lake is just a stone’s throw from the Shinshu Watch Studio where this masterpiece takes shape. The serene patterns of the dial reflect the gentle undulations of the lake, offering a mesmerizing spectacle when the light dances across the dial.

In addition, the watch highlights the fluid movement of the seconds hand, characteristic of the Spring Drive movement. Combined with the golden accents, it tells the story of a quiet passage of time, evocative of a sunrise on the surface of the lake.

This watch is equipped with the new Spring Drive 5-day caliber, which takes advantage of the high performance of the 9RA5 caliber. A well-thought-out design that highlights the power reserve indicator on the back of the movement, underlining the artisanal character of the dial – a true Grand Seiko signature.

Preserving the emblematic Grand Seiko style first established in 1967 with the famous 44GS, the anniversary edition seamlessly melds tradition with modernity. It preserves the powerful persona of the original, while presenting a more tranquil demeanor.

Furthermore, the case engages the viewer with a subtle interplay of Zaratsu polish and brushed finishing, offering a flawless mirror finish and a harmonious glow. Well-defined hands and hour-markers ensure clarity, ensuring the watch is as functional as it is elegant.
