1981 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Zephyr ref. 1038 with corporate Rolex provenance
Established in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis, Rolex revolutionized watchmaking with the first waterproof Oyster in 1926. Pioneering innovations like the self-winding Perpetual movement in 1931 solidified Rolex’s reputation for precision and reliability. Through iconic models like the Submariner and Daytona, Rolex attained global prominence, symbolizing luxury, exceptional craftsmanship, and enduring quality in the world of watches.
This rare reference 1038, also called Zephyr, has a special place in Rolex production. Only produced in steel & gold, it features a gold bezel with two possible designs, only seen on this reference. This model has the engine-turned one, in mint condition, with nice patina. It features also a champagne dial and comes in a 34mm case.
This example is special, not only because of its immaculate condition, but also because it was gifted by Rolex Argentina to one of their employees, after 25 years of service. Produced in 1981, this watch was gifted in 1989. It has most likely spent 8 years in Rolex stock before being awarded, and has probably seen few wrist time since. Bracelets on Zephyr models are usually in gold and steel, but given the provenance and the fact that this bracelet was also produced in 1981, we believe this is the original bracelet of the watch.
