Founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier in Paris, Cartier quickly became renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and timeless designs, earning the title of “Jeweler to the Kings.” From its early days, Cartier was known for blending luxury, innovation, and artistry, creating pieces that captivated royalty, aristocrats, and celebrities alike.
In the early 20th century, Cartier revolutionized watchmaking with the creation of the Santos in 1904, one of the first wristwatches designed specifically for men. Named after Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Santos was not only a functional timepiece but also a symbol of elegance and adventure, marking Cartier’s entry into the world of horology.
The Story behind the Cartier Santos is starting in 1906, when the crowd saw the aviator Santos-Dumont extract himself from his 14 bis airplane while checking his watch to see if he had just broken a record. 2 years earlier Louis Cartier had created the Santos watch to mark his friendship with the eponymous aviator. Its wish was granted: he could read the time in full flight.
There are many variants of the Cartier Santos, still in production since the 80s and you can always find the one for you. This example is a reference 119902 with moonphase, a quite rare iteration of this iconic model. It comes full set, with box, papers and setting pin.
