Cartier Tank Louis ref. 78086

1975 | Yellow gold | Manual | 23.0mm

The Tank Louis Cartier is the archetype. Not merely a classic watch, but the watch against which the very idea of a dress watch has been measured for over a century. Louis Cartier conceived it in 1917, inspired by the aerial view of a Renault FT tank on the Western Front — two parallel tracks, a rectangular body, a form that has never needed revision because it was right from the beginning.

Reference 78086 in 18k yellow gold is the perfect size — generous enough to command the wrist, refined enough to disappear beneath a cuff. The white dial carries everything it should: Roman numerals in black, blued steel hands, the cabochon sapphire crown, the railway minute track. A composition so familiar it has become shorthand for elegance itself, yet one that continues to earn that reputation every time it is seen in the flesh.

The movement is the reliable manual-wind calibre 78, entirely appropriate to the slender profile of the case. On the wrist, the weight of solid gold gives it a presence that gold-plated or steel alternatives simply cannot replicate.

This example presents in very fine condition, complete with its original Cartier clasp — a detail that confirms the watch has been kept with care and never subjected to unnecessary intervention.

A Tank Louis in yellow gold, as it should be.
