Jaeger-LeCoultre Odysseus in 18k gold with meteorite dial
1990 | Yellow gold | Automatic | 34.0mm
The Odysseus was Jaeger-LeCoultre's most ambitious integrated complication of the late 1980s and early 1990s — a chronograph with moonphase, date, and pulsometer scale assembled on a single dial, housed in a round gold case with the distinctive ball-shaped pushers that became one of the reference's most recognisable signatures. It represented the Vallée de Joux at its most generous: multiple complications, executed with the craft rigour that JLC's manufacture status demands.
This example takes an already exceptional watch and adds the most extraordinary dial material available to watchmaking: meteorite. Sliced from iron-nickel meteorites billions of years old, each meteorite dial carries the Widmanstätten pattern — those distinctive crystalline lines formed during the slow cooling of molten metal in space, over periods of time so vast they are effectively incomprehensible. No two meteorite dials are identical. The one on this Odysseus is as old as the solar system itself.
Against this cosmic backdrop, the three silvered subdials — 30-minute counter, 12-hour counter, and running seconds — float with a clarity that the dark, textured meteorite surface only amplifies. The moonphase aperture at 12 o'clock, the pulsometer scale running the periphery in red, and the date window complete a dial of extraordinary complexity and beauty.
In 18k yellow gold, the warm case metal plays against the cool, almost blue-grey of the meteorite with a contrast that is genuinely arresting.
A meteorite-dialled Odysseus is one of the great JLC rarities.
