Lecoultre American Art Deco watch in 18 karat yellow gold
1950 | Yellow gold | Manual | 33.0mm
For decades, Jaeger-LeCoultre sold its watches in the United States under the simpler LeCoultre name. US import duties made it cheaper to ship movements, dials and hands from the Vallée de Joux and have the cases made locally, so American case makers got to work on designs that were often bolder than anything sold in Europe. Collectors now hunt down these US market pieces precisely for that freedom of style.
This one has an extra card to play: its case is 18k gold, when American-made LeCoultre cases were usually 14k or gold filled. It is a rare find. The round case is framed by sculpted, open lugs that look more like architecture than watchmaking. The silvered dial is just as carefully composed, with applied gold Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9, faceted gold markers, a beaded minute ring and a small seconds subdial at six, all read by slim gold hands. The watch is in excellent condition and comes on a brown leather strap.
A dress watch with real character, from a time when LeCoultre was willing to have a little fun with its designs.
