Movado "Cioccolatone" in pink gold, waffle dial

1950 | Yellow gold | Automatic | 31.0mm

Sale price€5.400,00

Designed in the early 1950s, this Movado nicknamed by collectors as the "Cioccolatone", chocolate in Italian, for its bold rectangular block-like form, remains one of the most architecturally daring watches Movado produced. The case is its own statement: thick, faceted, almost geometric in its mass, with deeply bevelled lugs that flow seamlessly from the case sides. It belongs to a moment when Swiss design briefly allowed itself genuine sculptural ambition.

At its centre, the dial pairs two distinct textures: a polished outer field carrying the applied baton indices and the Movado signature, surrounded and contrasted by a finely textured waffle pattern that catches light in a thousand small reflections. The combination of smooth gold and granular texture gives the dial a depth that a flat surface could never achieve, shifting character constantly as the wrist moves.

At 31mm, the case wears larger than the measurement suggests, the faceted lugs and substantial profile give it real wrist presence, an almost architectural object as much as a watch. In pink gold, the warmth of the metal plays beautifully against both dial textures.

This example presents in very nice condition, the dial retaining its dual-texture clarity and the gold case its weight and warmth.

A Movado for those who understand that the 1950s were Swiss watchmaking's most fearless decade for design.
