Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803 "Wide Boy"

1969 | White gold | Automatic | 36.0mm

Sale price€10.900,00

The Day-Date reference 1803 was produced from 1956 through the late 1970s, and in that time it became the definitive statement of what a Rolex in solid gold could be — worn by heads of state, business leaders, and anyone for whom a watch was as much a declaration as a timepiece. The "Wide Boy" designation refers to the broader, more substantial case profile of certain 1803 examples, a collector term that has stuck precisely because it captures something real about the way these pieces wear differently from their slimmer counterparts.

The Japanese market configuration adds a further layer of distinction. Rolex produced specific dial variants for the Japanese market — most notably omitting the luminous material from both the dial indices and the hands, resulting in a cleaner, more graphic composition. Against the champagne dial, the applied gold baton indices and matching hands read entirely through contrast rather than lume, giving the whole a refinement that the standard lume-filled version cannot quite match. It is a detail that separates this example from the majority of 1803s encountered on the market.

The champagne dial — monochromatic, warm, gold on gold — is the 1803 at its most coherent: a watch that disappears into itself, every element the same temperature, legibility emerging from shadow alone.

A Wide Boy Day-Date in yellow gold with Japanese no-lume specification is a specific and genuinely uncommon configuration. The kind of 1803 that collectors who know the reference seek out.
