Rolex Zephyr ref. 1038 with rare corporate Rolex provenance
1979 | Steel & gold | Automatic | 34.0mm
The reference 1038 is among the more discreet entries in the Rolex catalogue — an Oyster Perpetual with a engine-turned gold bezel on a steel case, known to collectors as the "Zephyr" for the distinctive turbine-style bezel that sets it apart from the standard Oyster. Produced through the 1970s, it occupies that particular Rolex territory where tool watch robustness meets dress watch elegance, without fully committing to either.
This example carries a provenance that goes beyond the watch itself. Presented as a corporate gift to an employee of Rolex Argentina, the watch dates to 1979, its Oyster bracelet to 1981 — both almost certainly drawn from Rolex's own stock at the time of presentation in 1989. The combination tells a precise story: a gift assembled with care, from inventory, by the maison itself.
The result is a watch that has barely been worn. The champagne dial is immaculate, the gold bezel retains its full definition, and the bracelet shows none of the stretch that typically marks a decade of daily wear. Exceptional condition in every sense — not restored, simply preserved.
A Zephyr with a rare and cool history and the kind of physical condition that its story entirely explains.
