The Golden Bridge appeared in 1980 as one of those rare watches that genuinely had no precedent. Designed by the independent watchmaker Vincent Calabrese and produced by Corum, it answered the most fundamental question in horology — where should a movement live — in the most unusual way imaginable. Calabrese's response was a single line. The entire calibre, every wheel and pinion and spring, arranged baguette-style along one axis, suspended within a transparent case so that the mechanism floats visibly between two slabs of sapphire. More than four decades later, it remains one of the most distinctive things ever attached to a wrist.

This 1990s example in 18 kt yellow gold is the larger reference — more presence than the slim early editions, with a tonneau case whose flanks open completely onto the movement. The bridge itself is rendered in solid gold, supporting the linear calibre with the kind of architectural clarity the design demands. Seen on the wrist, the watch reads almost as a piece of jewellery from one angle and as a complete horological statement from another. Both readings are correct.

The movement is the manually-wound in-line calibre that defines the model — narrow, mechanically singular, and visible from virtually every direction the case allows. There is no dial in the conventional sense; hours and minutes are traced across the upper portion of the gold bridge itself. Restraint is not a word that applies here. Confidence is.

This piece presents in excellent condition, the case and movement both showing beautifully and the gold retaining its warm, original tone. The Golden Bridge in large format, in solid yellow gold, is the most emphatic version of an already emphatic idea — a watch that does not look like other watches because, at its core, it is not built like other watches.
