Movado Sport "Borgel Case" in stainless steel — 33mm

The Borgel case system — patented by François Borgel in Geneva in 1891 — was one of the earliest serious attempts to make a wristwatch water and dust resistant. The movement screws directly into the case from the back, eliminating the joint between case and caseback entirely and creating a sealed unit of remarkable integrity for its era. Watches built on this system are immediately recognisable by their distinctive profile: smooth, continuous sides with no visible case-back seam, and a crown that threads into the case band rather than sitting conventionally. For a 1930s or 1940s sport watch, it was genuine engineering.

This Movado Sport wears that construction with the honest character of a tool watch that has lived a full life. The cream dial has transformed over decades into a warm, mottled golden surface — uneven, textured, entirely original — with bold Arabic numerals in black that retain their legibility against the aged background. The small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock carries its own fine guilloché texture, a period detail visible through the patina. The "Movado Sport" signature sits cleanly above centre.

At 33mm, the Borgel case has a presence that exceeds its measurement — the smooth, uninterrupted case sides giving it a solidity that conventional snap-back cases of the same diameter cannot match.

A Movado Sport in Borgel configuration, with a dial this characterful, is a find worth pausing over.
